The Law is divided into 5 Chapters: The fundamental principles of environmental protection (1); The preservation and improvement of the national environment (2); Prevention of environmental pollution (3); The guidance and management of environmental protection (4); Compensation for and sanctions against environmental damage (5). This law stipulates principles of and regulates the protection of the environment, including soil, water and living beings. Provisions relative to land and forestry resources can be found in the Land Law of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (art. 9). Section 11 provides for the establishment of reserves and special reserves. Section 23 places restrictions on the abstraction of groundwater. Article 16 concerns the protection of birds and animals, including aquatic animals. Section 25 makes provision for the supply of potable water. Sections 30 and 31 prohibit the use of agricultural chemicals that are harmful to the environment or human life. Section 34 prohibits the importation of polluted fish, fruits, foodstuffs, and animal feed.
