Future Earth
Future Earth is the global research platform providing knowledge and support to accelearate transformations to a sustainable world. It is a 'federation' of projects and other initiatives related to Global Environmental Change. Future Earth follows on from International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP) which aimed to deliver and support interdisciplinary work and knowledge exchange. Launched in 2015, Future Earth is a 10-year initiative to advance Global Sustainability Science, build capacity in this rapidly expanding area of research and provide an international research agenda to guide natural and social scientists working around the world. It is also a platform for international engagement to ensure that knowledge is generated in partnership with society and users of science.
The Projects were launched under the umbrella global environmental change programmes: DIVERSITAS, International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP), and World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
The vision for Future Earth is that projects integrate in ‘Knowledge Action Networks’. Examples of such ‘Knowledge Action Networks’ include: System and social transformations, natural assets, sustainable development goals, urban development, human and planetary health, oceans, future coasts, and sustainable consumption.
