District Heating Rehabilitation
Funder/Donor
World Bank
Overview
The project aimed to reduce fuel costs and import requirements, bring about energy efficiency and economy in major district heating (DH) systems, and improve environmental conditions in Estonia. One of the objectives of the project was to improve environmental conditions in Estonia by reducing emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides from district heating systems. Second, some of the district heating systems use biogas as a fuel source, which is produced from organic waste such as manure and sewage sludge. Biogas contains methane and carbon dioxide, but also traces of other gases such as nitrogen, which need to be removed before combustion.
