The Act applies to land territory and land-based marine pollution. The purpose of this Act is to protect the environment by setting rules to prevent and plan activities in the prevention of air, water, ice, rock and soil, and noise pollution - as well as promoting the recycling of waste disposal. Wherever possible, best possible anti-pollution measures should be applied, i.e. use of less polluting raw materials, processes and systems etc. Anyone who produces, stores, transports, treats or disposes of waste is responsible for ensuring that there are no health issues or pollution of air, water, ice, rock or soil. It is not permitted to import waste into Greenland unless it is un-harmful and recyclable. Heavily polluting enterprises must be environmentally approval by local authorities. Anyone operating a business, an asset or institution shall, upon request from the supervisory authority, provide all information relevant for the assessment of a potential pollution hazard as well as any preventive or remedial measures. Fees may be applied for all activities related to the elimination of waste (planning, administration, collecting and transportation, guidance to consumers etc.).
