The present Act establishes conditions for the management of organic farming. The requirements for the production of organic foodstuffs are set out; rules for the certification on the origins of organic products and organic foodstuffs, as well as their labelling; quality control supervision are specified all in compliance with this law. The text contains definitions of terms therein employed and prohibits farmers from practicing organic and non-organic farming simultaneously (organic beekeeping excluded). In order to obtain the permit for organic crop and livestock production farmers are required to submit a written application for registration (details are given in the text) with the Ministry of Agriculture. The timeframe for conversion from conventional to organic farming is 2 years for arable land, meadows and pastures, 1 year for pastures and exercising areas for non-ruminants and 3 years for the current perennial cultures (vineyards, orchards and hop gardens). Ministry will regularly inspect producing, processing, storage and marketing systems, of products bearing organic farming labels.
