Overview

The project aimed to redirect development efforts to the different regions in the Maldives and make the country grow more equitably by assisting in protecting public health and the environment, encouraging private-sector waste management and sanitation, and raise public awareness of responsible environmental management. The project will fund a sewage treatment plant on the island of Hulhumalé that will reduce the release of untreated wastewater into the sea, protecting fisheries and tourism industry from pollution. Wastewater contains high levels of N r , which can cause eutrophication and hypoxia in coastal waters.
