This Directive sets out a common framework for the promotion of energy from renewable sources, which include wind, solar, aerothermal, geothermal, hydrothermal and ocean energy, hydropower, biomass, landfill gas, sewage treatment plant gas and biogases. In particular, these provisions establish mandatory national targets for the overall share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy and for the share of energy from renewable sources in transport. Furhermore, the Directive lays down rules relating to statistical transfers and joint projects between European Community Member States, joint projects with third countries, guarantees of origin, administrative procedures, information and training, and access to the electricity grid for energy from renewable sources. The Directive also establishes sustainability criteria for biofuels and bioliquids.
