Rural Environment Protection Project

Funder/Donor

World Bank

Overview

The project objective was to improve rural environmental management and reduce pollution from agricultural sources in Poland. The project aimed to achieve this objective by supporting four components: (1) institutional development and capacity building; (2) rural environmental investments; (3) rural environmental awareness and education; and (4) project management, monitoring and evaluation. Its purpose was to limit agricultural nutrient emissions, notably nitrogen, which pollute water and eutrophicate. The project helped farmers adopt appropriate agricultural practises and invest in nitrogen-runoff-causing manure, dung, and silage storage facilities. The experiment also monitored nitrogen balance in soil and water, which indicates how effectively nitrogen is used and how much is lost to the environment. The project sought to improve Baltic Sea water quality and biodiversity by lowering agricultural nitrogen pollution.
