High Efficiency Lighting Project
Funder/Donor
Overview
The project objective was to demonstrate the technical and financial feasibility of reducing both greenhouse gas emissions and local environmental contamination through the widespread installation of high-efficiency lighting and appliances in the residential sector in Mexico. The project aimed to reduces the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are greenhouse gases and air pollutant. By replacing inefficient incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and appliances, the project avoids the combustion of fossil fuels in power plants that produce NOx. The project also reduces the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), which is a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting substance. By promoting the recycling and proper disposal of CFLs and appliances, the project prevents the release of N2O from landfills where these products may decompose.
